Rally for mothers
and babies planned
for Labor Day in Hilo
A rally is planned from 10 a.m. to noon Monday at the Hilo Medical Center. The event is one of more than 100 planned nationwide for Improving Birth’s “National Rally for Change on Labor Day.”
Improving Birth aims to bring awareness to the lack of evidence-based maternity care in the U.S. According to the organization, “we are needlessly subjecting mothers and babies to major abdominal surgery, the long-term side effects that go along with that and the unnecessary risk of death for both.”
According to the group’s founder Dawn Thompson, the events are not a protest, but “a public awareness campaign to bring attention to the outdated practices that have been proven time and again to not be what is best for moms and babies.”

There will be separate reading groups: kindergarten, grades 1 to 2, 3 to 4, 5 to 6 and their parents. Each group will have a person reading aloud to them, followed by a discussion of what was read.
Registration will take place from 4:30 to 5 p.m. in front of the library, program from 5 to 5:30 and reading by age group from 5:30 to 6. Afterward, families will meet on the lanai for light refreshments provided by Costco, door prizes and books. Participation is limited to 75 individuals.
